Hardening

Barberini has developed a highly advanced chemical process that makes optical glass lenses impact-resistant.

All sunglass lenses are chemically hardened: this prevents even minimal deformation caused by rapid cooling (thermal hardening), especially for the super thin 1.1 mm lenses used in polarized lenses, therefore assuring flawless optics and the spherical surface of the lens. Chemically hardened lenses, including the ultra thin versions like 1,5 and 1,6 mm thick lenses or wafers destined to polarized lenses, pass the Drop Ball Test (American Standard ANSI Z80.3-1996): this means that the lenses do not shatter after impact with a 16 mm diameter stainless ball dropped from a height of 130 cm. Our technicians do even more strict experimental inspection tests using larger steel balls from higher distances compared to our standard tests.
